The complete portfolio for all designer's needs

Designcenter Solid Edge

What is Designcenter Solid Edge?

Designcenter Solid Edge: integrated product design, engineering, and validation..

Designcenter Solid Edge is the Siemens portfolio that covers the entire product development process within a single environment: mechanical and electrical design, simulation, manufacturing, data management, and technical publications.

It combines the speed of direct modeling with the control of parametric design through synchronous technology, shares the Parasolid geometric kernel — the same one used by Designcenter NX — with 100% 3D model compatibility between the two lines, and is designed to replace disconnected legacy design systems with a continuous workflow from initial idea through to production.

Enter the world of Designcenter and discover the right solution for your needs

Mechanical design

Modeling integrates wireframe, surface, solid, parametric, and direct techniques. Synchronous technology combines the speed of direct modeling with the control of parametric modeling, and also works on geometry created in other CAD systems. Next Generation Design, based on Convergent Modeling, opens up generative modeling, additive manufacturing, and reverse engineering, working together on solid geometry and mesh data within the same file.

Complementing this are a complete sheet metal system covering the entire process from design to fabrication, high-performance assembly management — from just a few parts to hundreds of thousands of components — drafting and detailing with checks that automatically comply with mechanical drawing standards, Model Based Definition to reduce time spent on engineering documentation in favor of fully digital processes, an adaptive user interface that uses artificial intelligence to predict next steps based on user behavior, and a first-person navigation tool (Walkthrough) for exploring assemblies and capturing paths for reuse in animations or presentations, usable with an Xbox controller as well as mouse and keyboard.

Electrical design

Designcenter Solid Edge includes a dedicated line for electrical and mechanical co-design, built for teams that need the two domains to communicate without constantly switching between formats:

  • Solid Edge Wiring Design — a graphical environment for wiring diagrams and service documentation, with integrated electrical analysis and simulation from the earliest project stages, including features for 2D layout of reusable, configurable industrial control panels
  • Solid Edge Harness Design — a 2D environment for cable harness and formboard design, automating the flow from design to production by generating full-scale, fabrication-ready drawings, bills of materials, and production reports
  • Solid Edge Electrical Routing — a dedicated environment for routing wires, cables, and harnesses within the mechanical assembly, with a connected mode that highlights changes between the ECAD and MCAD environments in real time via cross-probing
  • PCB Design e Solid Edge PCB Collaboration — tools for schematic capture and printed circuit board layout, with hierarchical 2D/3D planning and placement, and collaboration between electrical and mechanical teams

Simulation

Simulation is scalable and integrated, designed to reduce the number of physical prototypes needed:

  • Solid Edge Simulation —integrated finite element analysis (FEA) for validating parts and assemblies directly within the Solid Edge environment
  • Simcenter FLOEFD per Solid Edge — computational fluid dynamics (CFD) fully integrated into the CAD environment, for optimizing performance and reliability with respect to fluid flow, heat transfer, and electromagnetic effects
  • Simcenter Flomaster per Solid Edge — 1D thermo-fluid system modeling, which automatically generates a model from CAD data to calculate flow rate, temperature, and pressure drop across piping networks

Data management

Data management capabilities are scalable: they range from features built directly into the CAD environment — Windows Explorer integration, part and assembly previews, and direct access to utilities like Revision Manager and View and Markup — up to Teamcenter's full data management and PLM capabilities, which bring 3D models and 2D drawings together into a single data source accessible to both design and manufacturing. For cloud collaboration, Teamcenter Share allows you to share and review project data with colleagues, suppliers, and customers from any device.

Manufacturing (CAM)

Designcenter Solid Edge defines and executes a broad range of manufacturing processes — CNC machining, nesting, cutting, bending, stamping, welding, assembly, and additive manufacturing — working directly on part, sheet metal, and assembly models. The manufacturing instructions generated update automatically whenever the underlying design changes, rather than having to be redone manually. Solid Edge CAM Pro covers NC (numerical control) programming for professional machining operations.

Technical publications

Technical publishing tools work directly on Solid Edge parts and assemblies, without needing to convert CAD files into a different format, and automatically pick up changes made to the original design in documents that have already been published:

  • Solid Edge Illustrations — creates high-quality 3D PDF documents and cloud-ready illustrations, with annotations and balloon callouts on 3D views captured from the model
  • Solid Edge Publishing — authoring of interactive technical documents with embedded 3D models, bills of materials, and formatted text, for product manuals, illustrated spare parts catalogs, and service documentation
  • Traduzione XLIFF —  an add-on module for translating and localizing technical documents in XML Localization Interchange File Format

Here too, sharing via Teamcenter Share and direct integration with Teamcenter PLM allow you to open, save, and sync the latest version of project data.

Do you want to switch from your current SolidWorks CAD to Solid Edge?

Migrating from SolidWorks to Solid Edge is easier than you think! With Solid Edge's efficient import tools, you can transfer your data from SolidWorks without losing valuable information. Even if you have a large number of previous projects to manage, fear not: Solid Edge allows you to plan the migration in several stages, adapting to your needs.

With Solid Edge, migration from SolidWorks becomes a smooth and stress-free experience.

Available packages

Here it's worth being precise rather than brief: there are two distinct package structures, and they are not interchangeable.

The four Solid Edge configurations (Design and Drafting, Foundation, Classic, Premium) represent the product's traditional structure:

  • Design and drafting — the most accessible package: basic part and assembly design, 2D drafting, synchronous technology, data management, mesh modeling, additive manufacturing preparation, and basic motion simulation
  • Foundation — adds advanced part and assembly design, sheet metal, frames and welding, surface modeling, 2.5-axis milling, part simulation, and bulk migration tools
  • Classic — adds subdivision modeling, photorealistic rendering, standard parts libraries, supplier catalog integration (CADENAS), an adaptive interface, reverse engineering, design-for-cost, and generative design
  • Premium — the most complete package: adds piping and ducting design, PCB collaboration, electrical routing, point cloud visualization, linear stress simulation, advanced motion simulation, and simulation optimization

Designcenter Solid Edge: three levels

The three tiers are cumulative: each one includes all the features of the previous tier and adds new capabilities, rather than replacing them.
This is an advantage that spans all three tiers, not one reserved for Premium: for a limited time, as communicated by Siemens, every Designcenter X Solid Edge seat, at any tier, includes a free license for Designcenter X NX Essentials, the browser-based CAD/CAM/CAE environment from the NX line. This isn't a Solid Edge tier — it's an NX product included as an extension, useful for capturing ideas away from your main workstation and then transferring them into Solid Edge without conversion, thanks to the shared Parasolid kernel.

Industry recognition

Designcenter Solid Edge has received recognition from independent review platforms: G2 lists it as the most highly rated CAD solution among small and medium-sized businesses, and Capterra flagged it as the top-rated option for overall user ratings in 2024. These are third-party assessments based on user reviews, not recognition independently verified by me. Siemens also cites results reported by its own customers — again, vendor-supplied data rather than a neutral benchmark: an average design time savings of between 30 and 50 percent with synchronous technology, assembly modifications reported as 40 percent faster compared to competing CAD systems according to customer statements, and a 20 percent time savings in collaboration with internal teams, suppliers, and customers.
