Designcenter Solid Edge Licensing Guide

Designcenter Solid Edge: desktop packages and cloud tiers

Solid Edge has historically had four desktop licenses (Design and Drafting, Foundation, Classic, Premium), and, with the arrival of the cloud version, three subscription tiers (Standard, Advanced, Premium).

The corresponding licenses tiers

Design and Drafting (No X equivalent)

What it includes (core features, independent of license type)

An introduction to part and assembly design, with automatic drafting. Drawing layout, detail controls, automatic annotation and dimensioning. CAD data import and export functions.

Foundation | X Standard

What it includes (core features, independent of license type)

Everything in the base tier, plus: sheet metal, welding, and structural framework features (desktop); AI-assisted modeling and synchronous technology, working on mesh/sheet metal/frames/welding without conversions, integrated simulation during the design phase, native cloud data management with PDM and real-time collaboration (cloud). Design Configurator Basic included from this tier upward.

Classic | X Advanced

What it includes (core features, independent of license type)

Everything in Foundation/Standard, plus: KeyShot photorealistic rendering, project management, basic FEA simulation (desktop); design-for-cost, reverse engineering, subdivision modeling, generative design, and Teamcenter Share with AR/VR features (cloud).

Premium | X Premium

Premium | X Premium

Everything in Classic/Advanced, plus: full FEA simulation, structured cable and piping design (desktop); motion and stress simulation, point cloud visualization, electrical routing, and advanced assembly management (cloud).

License types

  • Named User — assigned to a specific user, usable from any workstation but not shareable. According to the source, associated with the pure Designcenter X Solid Edge line
  • Floating (Concurrent/Network) — hosted on a license server, "checked out" at startup and returned at shutdown; the number of licenses covers simultaneous users, not the total user count. Associated with the Designcenter Solid Edge XaaS line
  • Node-Locked — tied to the hardware of a specific machine. Also associated with the XaaS line

System requirements (desktop licenses)

Recommended configuration: Windows 10 Enterprise or Professional 64-bit (v20H2+), 9 GB disk space, 32 GB RAM or more, True Color/16 million colors, 1920x1080 resolution, 2 GB video RAM. Minimum configuration: same operating system and disk space, 16 GB RAM for commercial use (8 GB for academic use), 65,000 colors. Check these requirements against the latest release before communicating them to a customer — they refer to a specific version, not necessarily the current one.

Value Based Licensing

Both lines support extension through token-based Value Based Licensing — with add-ons such as Generative Design Pro, Simulation, Electrical Routing, and others.
